Cover Letters

Cover letters are basically summarized business letters sent out with resumes to let employers know why you are the best person for the job. A cover letter is used to point out to employers what experience and benefits you can bring to their company. A cover letter is a very important document, reflecting what you are like as both a person and as an employee.

Your cover letter should be typed up in the same font and style as your resume to give a more professional look. You should always try and make sure that every cover letter you write is personalised to each employer. No two cover letters should be the same; the cover letter templates further down the page should be used as guidance only and not copied word for word.

When writing your cover letter, make sure that you address your letter to a very specific person in the company, including their job title. Make sure that you check the spelling on your cover letter; nothing is more likely to put employers off than spelling mistakes in your cover letter. You might also want to use a block letter format and keep it short. A good idea is to keep your cover letter short and to the point since employers wonÂ’t have time to read more than a couple of paragraphs. Make it easy for the company to get in touch with you, include work and home phone number, your home address and your email.
